Alone, but not lonely: A Guide To Traveling Alone

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

Did your friend back out on your trip of a lifetime? This does not have to be a reason to delay the trip. Even when traveling alone, there are plenty of ways to have an unforgettable experience.

3 tips for Making the Most of a Vacation When Traveling Alone:

1. Consider it Time for Renewal: A little introspection and personal development at a spa in Vermont or Arizona may be just the thing to lift your spirits.

2. Make Good Use of the Time: Plan a trip that makes the most of your personal or professional interests. For instance, if you are a writer, attend a retreat ina well-known haven for creative types like Vitorchiano, Italy.

3. Schedule individual group activities: If you want to be on your own most of the time, but would like to have a couple of hours with other people, sign up for a tango class or other guided activity.

When planning your trip, it is also important to take a few precautions. Follow these three helpful tips.

1. Research the Countries: Before buying a plane ticket, check the Department of State’s travel advisories at travel.state.gov. The site lists threats to safety, information on criminal penalties should you inadvertently break the law, medical facilities and health information.

2. Ensure Your Safety: Make sure you do not arrive at your destination late at night. Also, whenever you are out at night, no matter how close to the hotel you find yourself, take a taxi. Taking all efforts to protect your safety is especially important when traveling alone.

3. Be Prepared: Whether you travel alone or with someone else, make sure to carry emergency numbers, leave copies of your itinerary and other important papers with a trusted family member or friend at home. Plan for the unexpected and invest in International travel medical insurance.
